Select Fence Group is an Athens, GA fence contractor for commercial projects, builders and homeowners. We install heavy-duty perimeter and security fencing for job sites, campuses and businesses, plus wood, aluminum, steel, chain link and farm fences for homes and farms. From UGA's Health Sciences Campus to historic district homes near downtown, we handle the planning, permit steps and installation so your fence is built right and on schedule.
Athens properties come with their own challenges. Red clay soil, sloped lots, mature trees and humid summers all affect how a fence should be built and how long it lasts. In older neighborhoods, the Athens-Clarke County Historic Preservation Commission may also need to approve the style and height before any posts go in.
We set posts deep enough to stay solid in Georgia clay, choose materials that hold up to Athens heat and storms, and walk you through the county permit requirements before work starts. Wood fences add backyard privacy in town, aluminum and steel panels follow the grade on sloped lots, chain link is a cost-effective choice for commercial sites, and farm fencing keeps livestock in on rural land outside the city.
On commercial and new construction projects, we work with general contractors, developers and property managers to install perimeter and security fencing that keeps the job on schedule. We can also pair your fence with landscape work for a finished site, like the outdoor dining area we built for Cafe Racer Coffee + Donuts.

Minor repairs usually do not need a permit.
The county asks for a property survey or plat, a site plan drawn to scale that shows fence and gate locations and distances to property lines, and the fence height, materials and gate details. If your neighborhood has an HOA, plan on an approval letter as well. Not sure where your line is? Our post on getting a property survey before a fence explains when you need one. Most residential permits are approved in about 7 to 10 business days, and spring and summer are the busiest seasons.
Homes in historic districts such as Boulevard, Cobbham, and Milledge Avenue need Historic Preservation Commission approval for fence style, height, and materials. Front yard fences are usually limited to 4 feet, and wood or metal is typically preferred over vinyl or composite. Historic review adds time, so start the conversation a few weeks before you want work to begin.
Requirements can change. Confirm current rules with Athens-Clarke County before you build.

I recently purchased a new home in Jefferson, Georgia, and my Builder recommended Robert . Having never purchased a metal fence before I had no idea what the cost should be, or what the installation time or process looks like. We have two dogs that are not particularly easy on a home if they’re cooped up so getting off fence in a timely manner was extremely important. I called Robert . He came out either the same day or the next day. Got me a quote within 24 hours and to my delight, it was significantly lower than worst case scenario’s predicted by ChatGPT. ChatGPT I guess is like self diagnosing a health issue on Google probably not the best idea because it gives you worst case scenario. Anyhow, he gave me a price that I thought was reasonable, and he was able to get the job completed in a reasonable timeframe. I spoke to other companies who could not give me a clear answer on the timeline. The day of the job is Crew came out talk to me and made sure we were on the same page got right to work and then knocked out about 350 feet of aluminum fence with three gates in one day. The fence looks great. My dogs aren’t tearing up my house and I have somebody I will now recommend for fence work in the future. Great job guys!Posted on Google![]()

Minor repairs usually do not need one. Our Athens-Clarke County fence permit guide covers the full process.

Yes. In historic districts such as Boulevard, Cobbham and Milledge Avenue, the Historic Preservation Commission reviews fence style, height and materials. Front yard fences are usually limited to 4 feet, and wood or metal designs that match the home’s period are typically preferred.
Permitted fences typically get a post hole inspection before concrete is poured and a final inspection after installation. Common reasons a fence fails inspection include shallow posts, building in an easement, going over the height limit and crossing onto a neighbor’s lot.
Georgia clay holds water and shifts, so post depth matters more than the fence style. On sloped lots, aluminum and steel panels can follow the grade cleanly. Wood fences work well too, but plan to stain or seal them every two to three years to handle the Athens humidity.
